With the chaos of fall semester starting this week, I wanted to do something fun for my blog post. As you probably know, I love Pokémon. I've written a few blog posts about it if you're curious. For this post, I thought I'd share my favorite and least favorite pokémon and what it can teach you about me. Perhaps it will lead to your own pokénalysis of your own favorites and least favorites.

Favorites
Over half of my favorite pokémon fall into the category of "chunky." I love myself a good, fat, squishable chonk. Many of my chonks also have a tiny, minimal detail oval or circular eye-shape. You can't go wrong with a big chonk with little eyes. They are sooooooo cute! I also have 2 skinny dragon forms with no arms or legs. There doesn't seem to be a specific animal or form associated with my favorites. Animals include hippo, seal, cat, turtle/tortoise, elephant, crocodile, bird, dog, skinny dragon, and squid. It's a wide range of animals, both on land, sea, and sky. We do have quite a few chunky animals.
Typically inanimate objects in the list include mostly foods: pumpkin, apple pie, cloud, sword, and flowers. I do like a lot of food-based pokémon that also didn't make it to the top: Hydrapple, the Vanillish evolution line, Alcremie, Dachsbun, Cherubi, Smoliv... I could go on). There are plenty of inanimate object-based pokémon, but not many made my list. Many people tend to dislike object-based pokémon, but they're mostly neutral for me. None made it to my least favorite list, either.
Only 3 of my favorites are humanoid (standing upright with arms). Unfortunately, Gardevoir is one of those humanoid pokémon that falls victim to Rule 34; that's not why I like them. Rule 34 is actually the reason why I dislike most humanoid pokémon, though a couple I like didn't make the top 25 list (Medicham and Mienshao, among others).
Shinies
I decided to do a list solely for shinies as some shinies have given me renewed favoritism and love for the pokémon. You'll notice some of my normal favorites are also my shiny favorites; that might be luck but it might also be a pattern to analyze. Let's see...
There's an obvious color pattern for most of my shinies: cool colors like blue, purple, and violet-pink as well as black. Only the Zorua, Zoroark, Zygarde, Gardevoir, and Aurorus shinies are based in whites. There's a lot of overlap in which shinies are also my favorite pokémon: Clodsire, Spheal, Gardevoir, Dragonair, Pumpkaboo, Roselia, Swalot, and Mareanie all appear in both. The newcomers for this 25 include: Ampharos, Vanomoth, Oinkologne, Glimmora, Cloyster, Orthworm, and Hydreigon at the very least.
I remember my first time seeing Venomoth, Zorua, and Glimmora. These were probably in my top 100, then moved right up the list when shiny hunting became easier in the Switch Pokémon games. Normally, I wouldn't even consider a bug type in my favorites, and Venomoth's beautiful blue changed that for me. She's now one of my favorite shinies to use in Violet. I love a good cerulean blue or violet. The shiny pattern is obvious.
There doesn't seem to be a pattern in object, animal, or humanoid base here. Only Gardevoir remains humanoid in both. Animals in this list have expanded to include worm, moth, pig, oyster, ostrich, dinosaur, dolphin, and dragon. Inanimate objects now include a dandelion(?) in addition to the flowers already there via Roselia. Color is the only main pattern with the shinies.
What Haunts Me at Night
My least favorites have definite characteristics. First, it is probably obvious what my least favorite real animal is: monkeys/apes. Dear God do they haunt me at night. Humanoid, but not humanesque. Something creepy and inbetween. 12, a good majority, of my least favorites resemble monkeys or apes in some way: Munkidori, Oranguru, Zarude, to name a few. Other animals include crab, rabbit, squirrel, and spider but they are nowhere near as representative as monkey/ape pokémon.
I also am a bit creeped out by dead eyes. These are most prominent in Crabominable, Carnivine, Darumaka, and Impidimp. Greedent's eyes are also what ruins that pokémon for me, though they aren't the same as the dead eyes in the previously mentioned least favorites. There aren't really any object-based pokémon in this list. It's also interesting to note how many more legendaries made this list than my previous two. My bottom 25 includes 6 legendaries, while my favorites and shinies include 1 each, and it isn't the same pokémon on those lists. Needless to say, Pokémon has enough monkeys and humanoid legendaries. I hope they add no more.
As monkeys and apes tend to be humanoid, there are plenty of humanoids in my hate-list: Conkeldurr, Morgrem, and the fugly forces of nature legendaries to name a few. I don't like most humanoids, so a few humanoids didn't quite make the list as they don't haunt me at night but I also think they're ugly: Gurdurr, Machamp's evolution line, Hypno, and Sawk. My cousin once said his dream pokémon would be a Machampipede, and then I realized that would be my nightmare pokémon. Yikes.
Pokénalysis
So what do we make of these lists and comparing them. Overall, I feel there is one obvious pattern. Real life loves and fears transfer over into the Pokémon universe for me. I love food and chunky animals in real life; I likewise hate monkeys and humanoid creatures. My trouble making eye contact might also be said to transfer over into my disliked pokémon with dead eyes. Some of my favorites like roselia and torkoal even have permanently closed eyes now that I think about it. My favorite colors of blue and purple also transfer into my top shinies.
Likewise, I also see that exceptions for my disgusts exist. I have multiple humanoid pokémon in my top lists despite most of them being in my dislike list. Ceruledge lacks human facial features, Gardevoir does too. And Sneasler gives me more clawed-animal than human. It shows room for growth; there are different designs by different designers that can uniquely blend some of my favorite things with my least favorite things about Pokémon. Perhaps there is room in my heart for more? As I look forward to the new game releasing in October, all I can say is that I'm excited to expand my collection.
