For the last year, I've researched, took a summer seminar, and planned to start a podcast. In the middle of a snowy winter night, I bought a modest microphone, filter, and everything! I settled on the title I Disappoint My Dad as many of my stories, reflections, and comedic rants tended to center around what my friend called "exceeding expectations" and what I called "failing to meet expectations" set by the dads, the rule-makers and leaders both big and small in the world around me. I had even written some scripts for episode ideas in the intensive 1-week seminar class I took on multimodal communication. I thought I had thought it all through.
Obviously, this is a blog post, not a podcast episode. It hadn't occurred to me that night I bought my podcast equipment that this wasn't the form of communication for me. Despite a long-forgotten Youtube I wrote scripts and performed for with my close friends in high school and my short Blackboard lessons from all the asynchronous online courses I taught in the last couple of years, video and audio really aren't for me. I'm a perfectionist living in a small apartment with two lovely, loud cats and an upstairs neighbor who is constantly screaming at his child. I'm not always fond of how I look. I've never been content with how I sound. I was ready for a podcast I'd never produce after cringing over the first episode I put together and edited for the seminar I took.
Tonight, just after midnight of Pi Day 2024, I decided to take the plunge and start something I know I can continue to improve, edit, and create in order to get more involved with conversations about what I'm reading, experiencing, and hoping to hear more on. I've always been a writer, both professionally and creatively. Blogs seem like the genre for me, at least for now. Thanks for choosing to spend some time with me here. The plan so far is to write once or twice a week, and see what happens. When will I publish next? It's not solid yet, but I'll be with you shortly.
